Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
